We struggled for numbers as Steve Hesketh and Charlie Gibson both withdrew from the tour. Despite this setback we (eventually) got going after lunch in the Acton. After finding our hotel we went on a sightseeing tour organised by Gordon, who was brought up in the area, and ended up in the Strawberry Duck in Entwistle. By an amazing coincidence we met Gordon’s Brother in law (Henry) who agreed to play on the Sunday. We observed the time-honoured traditions of the tour by going for a curry and having the odd half. The evening was somewhat marred by the captain crushing his middle finger (bowling hand!) in the mini-bus door.

We set off on the Sunday morning and found the very pleasant ground at Ribchester.
Ribchester batted first with Nick Mallory attacking the bowling from the off and going on to retire on 52. Tony took his first ever catch in dismissing Boyes off Eifion’s bowling. Benjamin top-scored with 70 not out as Dee Valley’s bowling attack took a bit of stick, restricted by the fact we only had five fit (or not so fit) bowlers. Planty lacked any real fire due to the broken digit and Paj added to the disabled list by attempting a catch on the artificial strip resulting in a case of “carpet burn”! The innings closed with Ribchester posting 230 for 8. Brian was the pick of the Dee Valley bowlers with 4 for 47 but Evs' athletic fielding was described as being like “Bambi on ice”.

The Dee Valley reply was largely headed by Eifion, who made a respectable 32 runs including six fours. Second top scorer was extras with 20! Hussain’s pace proved difficult but young spinner Alex Hallam was the best Ribchester bowler with 4 for 8! The reply closed on 95 which was not a bad effort considering the injury problems. Overall this was a very enjoyable tour and we will look forward to a return fixture next season.
